Marietta's Archway
On December 15, 2007, a handful of dedicated people came to this cemetery to show honor, respect, and remembrance. The people, led by Paige Joyner, laid approximately 20 wreaths at various graves to commemmorate the event. They too had seven ceremonial wreaths which were laid at the Monument. They spoke and honored the men and women resting there and of the history they made.
This cemetery is one of five national cemeteries to have a monumental masonry archways. It was built in 1883 to provide burial for the North and South in hopes this would ensue towards peace. Peace did not come of this, which is why so many are interned there.
The is a book being published about this cemetery and its history. It is our hope that this will bring awareness to all the the Wreaths Across America program is not just of honoring recent military internments, but all military internments. Had it not been for these men and women, would we even be here?
